This is the biggest concern I have right now. Frankly, I hate the feeling of losing consciousness. I hate being unaware in dreams, and I hate the mental fog that is present upon waking. Cultivating gets rid of it the quickest, but for me, it's like I have to additonally cut through multiple shells that are in place, to get to feeling myself again, and get chemicals flowing right (seriously, there is a large chemical difference I experience from waking to 15 minutes awake, AFTER manipulating my consciousness).
I've felt that I can force myself to stay aware and chemically awake while falling asleep, sort of in "stages," cutting through layers of "zaps" (ha) with will, fighting off hypnogagnia, but it is tiring.
Is there any easy answer, or was I on the right track with not losing any will & awareness while falling asleep.

Are you trying to have lucid dreams?
Or is it the fact of losing awareness by falling asleep that bothers you?
One solution would be to start enjoying your dreams, so that you don't mind falling asleep.

The simple fact of losing consciousness. Being unaware of dreams while still holding some awareness. It never feels like it's lost, only muffled. Even in pre sleep hypnogagnia, I'm aware of myself communicating and interacting "somewhere else". I'd like to be aware of the entirety of that "background" process.
